Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor gave fans a stunning surprise last night at his poolside concert at the Hard Rock Hotel. Everybody expected a major dose of heavy metal, but Corey wanted a break from his regular routine.
Corey’s appearance, dressed as Elvis Presley, won cheers and raves from the crowd at the Beach Club. Corey and his band rapidly launched into a series of unlikely and entertaining cover tunes, including “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield, Green Day’s “Basket Case,” “Just What I Needed” by The Cars and Nirvana’s “About a Girl.”
Corey ripped through many other songs -- including Flock of Seagulls’ “I Ran,” Lita Ford’s “Kiss Me Deadly” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” -- and turned the Soundwaves series into an electric nighttime pool party. He joked with the crowd: “Everyone has been asking if I was going to play my stuff tonight. No way!
“I’m off the clock tonight!”
His unusual ploy worked well, with fans roaring their approval of his unexpected and offbeat music choices. Corey, who also is the lead singer of Stone Sour, has collaborated on projects with Avenged Sevenfold, Anthrax and Apocalyptics. Three of Slipknot’s albums have made the Top Three on the Billboard 200 album charts.
The Soundwaves series highlights artists in the unique and intimate setting of the Hard Rock pools. Thanks to photographer Erik Kabik for his great gallery of shots from last night.
