Beyonce’s Run the World (Girls)
The 2012 Billboard Music Awards will air on ABC from MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 20, it was announced this morning. It’s a partnership with Chevrolet and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Eminem and Justin Bieber duked it out at last year’s show, each taking home six awards during the star-studded telecast that gave ABC a ratings victory over the season finale of “Celebrity Apprentice.”
The return to Las Vegas marks the second Billboard Music Awards since 2007 and will include a performance by the winner of Billboard’s annual nationwide Battle of the Bands contest.
The awards reflect Billboard’s chart rankings and are based on the reporting period of March 1, 2011, through Feb. 29, 2012. Artists will be recognized in a variety of genres, including R&B, rap, pop, country, rock, Latin and alternative.
Last year’s ceremony featured performances from Britney Spears, Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Keith Urban, Taio Cruz, Cee Lo Green, Lady Antebellum, Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, Far East Movement, Pitbull, Mary J. Blige with Lil Wayne, One Republic and a special appearance by Neil Diamond.
However, history will likely point to Beyonce’s visually groundbreaking performance of “Run the World (Girls)” -- with its 100 backup dancers and virtual Beyonce duplicates -- as the night’s most enduring moment.
The awards will be co-executive produced again for ABC by Richard Beckman and Don Mischer. Vegas DeLuxe will follow the announcements of performers, presenters and more as the May 20 airdate approaches.
