In 2011, Bailey Gumm was crowned Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen and became a contestant in the national Miss America Teen Pageant. Now, as newly crowned Miss Douglas County, Bailey will compete in this weekend’s 65th annual Miss Nevada Pageant.
Bailey, who hails from Minden in Douglas County in the northwestern corner of the state, is related to Judy Garland, whose real name was Frances Gumm before she changed it and became Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz.” Bailey loves Broadway musicals, too, and has danced at Disney World. But her plan is to earn a master’s degree and become a speech pathologist for autistic children. Her brother Alex was born with autism.
If she wins the Miss Nevada title, she’ll go on to Atlantic City for the Sept. 15 pageant (Miss America has moved back to its original home after a seven-year run on the Strip).
The Miss Nevada and Miss Nevada Outstanding Teen competitions will be at Texas Station on Friday and Saturday. The event will conclude with the crowning of the new titleholders by Miss Nevada 2012 Randi Sundquist and Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen 2012 Ellie Smith from Henderson.
In another pageant update, the Tropic Beauty Model Search world finals will be back at MGM Grand next March. Over 30 of the beauties were here last weekend for a celebrity invitational golf tournament in which Team Mexico trounced Team USA for the 1942 Cup at Shadow Creek Golf Course. Golfers got to judge the preliminary bikini contest at the ultra-private Liquid pool party at Aria and picked four girls to go to the world finals.
SEXY BLACK TAPE: With the name "Black Tape Project," you would be forgiven for thinking it’s a new National Security Agency code word being revealed. Not so; this may well become one of the hottest and sexiest nightclub fashion trends to hit Las Vegas. Black tape parties began in Miami and quickly moved to the French Riviera and Ibiza.
Now I’m reliably hearing that the Vegas version will be unveiled soon at Marquee in the Cosmopolitan – just the right amount of wrong? Several gorgeous nightlife models and strip-club dancers have already auditioned and signed on to strut their stuff in strategically placed black-tape fashions.
MODEL EMPLOYEES: Amid tears, Aspen was eliminated on "Model Employee," the VH1 reality competition set at Mandalay Bay. A second model goes home tonight. The glamour girls had to take on such challenges as cleaning a swimming pool, racing with ice and drinks in 105 degree heat and working as ushers at "Ka" at MGM Grand.
VERONIC’S DEBUT: Sexy French-Canadian singer Veronic DiCaire, who has an uncanny ability to impersonate 50 different female recording stars (including Celine Dion, who discovered her), makes her Las Vegas debut tonight at a global travel industry party at the Garden of the Gods pool at Caesars Palace. Celine has promised to attend after her own performance at the Colosseum theater. Veronic’s "Voices" show, co-produced with Celine’s husband Rene Angelil, opens at Bally’s Thursday, June 20.
Also performing on the final night of the five-day International POWWOW travel convention will be Donny & Marie, George Wallace, Recycled Percussion and Penn & Teller before a spectacular fireworks display ends the festivities. Caesars executives have put together a package of movie clips from 17 movies shot at the property, such as "Only Game in Town" from 1970, Robert Redford’s "Electric Horseman" from 1979, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise’s "Rainman" from 1988 and, of course, the original "Hangover" and this year's entry in that trilogy.
SKY DINING: It's certainly an uplifting dining experience. Owners of the new Dinner in the Sky attraction, with its two open-air tables suspended 180 feet high and overlooking the Strip, broke ground this morning.
I went up during a test run two years ago and although there's a strange sensation of feet dangling you do get stunning views of the Strip and the mountains. The food and wine were delicious for being that high off the ground; just remember to take your bathroom break before you take off! Owner Janeen Hinden and managing partner Kelly Jones hope to be serving eight nightly seatings to first guests later this summer. You can make reservations now at www.dinnerintheskylv.com.
CHEF CHARITY: A group of Las Vegas chefs is helping kitchen king Charlie Palmer (Mandalay Bay and the Four Seasons) with his Autism Angels, which helps families affected by autism. Championing the cause are Brian Massie (Light Group), Barry Dakake (N9NE Group at the Palms), Andre Rochat (Alize at the Palms), Vincent Pouessel (Aureole at Mandalay Bay), Steve Blandino (Charlie Palmer Steak at Four Seasons), Brian Howard (Comme Ca at the Cosmopolitan), Bruce Bromberg (Blue Ribbon Sushi, Cosmopolitan) and Laurent Pillard (Fleur at Mandalay Bay). The group is hoping to win $100,000 for the Las Vegas Sport Social start-up, which serves the needs of children with autism and other disabilities. Said Charlie, who has an autistic family member, “Project Vesto is offering $100,000 in seed capital to one of 12 start-up organizations who receive the most online votes. Please go to www.voteautism.com and vote for Sport Social. A vote today is a vote for autism, which is very close to my heart.”
Charlie, who has 13 coast-to-coast restaurants and two California hotels, regularly appears on NBC "Today."
TONIGHTS TIPS: The Spring Mountain Ranch State Park begins its new summer theater season with 12 performances of Meredith Wilson’s "The Music Man" Wednesdays through Saturdays until the end of the month. To celebrate the third anniversary of Surrender nightclub in Encore, hip-hop star Akon will perform.
TOMORROW’S TEASE: Talk about dueling pageants! Miss America’s Nevada pageant is determined not to let this weekend’s Miss USA pageant overshadow the local state contests for Outstanding Team. The Miss Nevada winner goes to September’s Miss America pageant in Atlantic City. We have a preview of the talent, swimsuit and evening gown competitions awaiting our Miss America State competitors -- just 24-hours before the new Miss USA gets crowned! We’ll also have a full photo report from tonight’s Miss USA preliminary pageant at Planet Hollywood.
