2014 AVN Awards: Red Carpet

Aiden Ashley and Dave Navarro arrive on the red carpet for the 2014 AVN Awards on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at the Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas. Launch slideshow »

The past year has exploded for porn princess Carter Cruise. Twelve months ago, she hit Las Vegas for the annual AVN/Adult Entertainment Expo and was barely known by anybody in the XXX-rated video business.

Today she returns here ready to be the belle of the ball at the 2015 AVN Awards with nine nominations, including Best New Starlet, Best Actress and Best Sex Scene in a XXX parody of “Cinderella.”

Carter is hoping that her “Meet Carter” and her romantic comedy “Second Chances” will really propel her from unknown to the top of her profession. It was only back in 2009 she began majoring in psychology and pre-law at East Carolina University. The Atlanta-born beauty pledged a sorority as a freshman and during her sophomore year at ECU began DJ duties.

In 2013, she worked the summer as an erotic photographer’s model and then left her studies to pursue a full-time career in the adult industry. Last March, she moved to Los Angeles to work full time in the adult industry and in June signed with Spiegler Girls, the same agency that represents Dana DeArmond, this year’s awards red carpet host.

In an article in AVN Magazine, Carter wrote: “I knew I wanted to be a Spiegler Girl before I had even shot my first scene. I did a lot of research on the industry to make sure I was cut out for porn, and I kept coming across his name and was really impressed by the girls he represented.

“Not only are Spiegler Girls outstanding and professional performers, but they are well-rounded, intelligent women who defy the negative stereotype of a porn star. It is an honor to be included in that tradition of excellence, and I am very excited for this next step in my career.”

Carter produced her first all-sex title, “Meet Carter,” which became a top-seller on the AVN and XBiz charts. Carter in her first year has appeared in several major features, including as Mrs. Polito in “American Hustle XXX” and as the lead in director Jacky St. James’ romance feature, “Second Chances.”

Adult-movie reviewers have commented about her passionate performances and willingness to engage in extreme sexual acts early in her career, with one describing her as “the Meryl Streep of Porn.” In addition to the “Sex Work” series of articles for Cosmopolitan’s website, she also became brand ambassador and spokesmodel for Airerose Entertainment.

Carter hasn’t forgotten her DJ days and will release her first single shortly and is working on several new songs. She’s revealed that she has always wanted to be in the entertainment industry, saying she came up with the concept of Carter Cruise as a brand and as a means to accomplish her goals in writing, acting, music and fashion.

“How can I do all of these things in one lifetime? Porn was the first step because it gave me the capital and the connections to not only build my brand but also to lay the foundations for other creative things.”

She says her mother also knows about her career and is supportive. “I was 100 percent aware of the stigma of porn when I made the decision to do it. What I’m doing is risky and I totally understand that and I understood the risk. A year ago, I was sitting in class wondering what the hell I was going to do with my life, and now here I am with nine AVN nominations. You’re in this whirlwind of experiences. I could write a book on the past year alone. I plan to do that, actually.”

Her collective 16 nominations, including seven for XBiz, make her the most-nominated starlet of 2014.

Here in her own words is her flashback to last year’s AVN/AEE:

I distinctly remember (OK, maybe the Red Bull vodkas mean I vaguely remember) running around AVN last year without a care in the world because no one knew or cared who I was. I had shot a handful of scenes in Florida and only a select few in L.A. I was just some blonde chick wearing too much neon and not enough makeup.

My flashy clothing and crazy dance moves caught some people’s attention, and someone asked, “I’m sorry, but who are you?” I smirked back wickedly, “Listen, I’m nobody, and this year, no one here knows my name, but next year, everyone at this convention will know who I am.”

I can’t say I’ve completely fulfilled my flippant jest, but things are definitely not the same. This entire week in Las Vegas is scheduled down to the minute; even simple things like dinners seem like luxuries at this point, and certainly no Red Bull vodkas this time around.

I wish that I could say I’m more prepared this year than last, but sadly that is not the case. Due to a hectic work schedule, the only thing I’m certain of is my dress, which I had custom made for the occasion. The rest of my outfits (which I intended to carefully plan) will be pulled together last minute.

I’m driving up today with my agent Mark Spiegler and a few other girls in my agency. Spiegler Girls is a small agency, repping only 25 to 30 girls at a time, but includes some of the top performers in the industry. We are a diverse and close-knit group, and traveling together to AVN is a tradition.

I worked late Monday night on a big feature set, so it’s likely I won’t get any sleep between work and the drive to Las Vegas, but I don’t mind because sleep is for the faint of heart. I’m just happy I don’t have to drive because I hate driving and would rather spend the time on my iPhone or laptop getting caught up on my writing or finalizing my website design.

I spend today getting settled in and mentally preparing for the rest of the week. I might work out or hit the spa to physically prepare myself, as well, which is followed by another Spiegler Girl tradition: dinner with members of the Adult DVD Talk forum, who regularly review our work.

I go to bed early, if the adrenaline lets me, because on Wednesday the show begins, and with signing for Girlfriends Films, hosting parties, representing Airerose Entertainment as their brand ambassador, interviews for adult and mainstream outlets, networking and speaking on the Best New Starlet panel, I won’t have time for much rest.

Luckily, I’m accustomed to not having much free time, as the past year has been a whirlwind. When I’m not shooting, I’m networking, writing, planning, doing interviews, working in the studio, etc. I’m also relieved that I’ll be too busy to think about the awards until Saturday night finally arrives.

I’m up for nine awards, eight for me and one for my showcase title, “Meet Carter,” so the stakes are high. Best New Starlet and Best Actress are the two I’m really hoping for, although I would be ecstatic to win any at all.

I’m definitely nervous. I’m always nervous as hell until I’m in front of a camera. I’m naturally shy but have learned over the years of performing in various ways like dance and acting to let myself go in the moment. There’s something comforting about a blinding light in my face, like I’m existing in another world, apart from my nerves and insecurities.

So much attention still makes me feel funny, though, and I’m still learning to adjust. It always feels strange when someone wants to interview me or tells me they’re a fan.

I still just feel like a Southern college girl from the suburbs! I’m a bookworm at heart and live in my own head. My experience-seeking personality stems from my love of books and the need to record my own epic stories.

I set out to have an adventure, and an adventure it has already been, but this week marks the beginning of a new chapter, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

The 2015 AVN/Adult Entertainment Expo starts Wednesday and continues through Saturday at the Hard Rock Hotel capped by the 2015 AVN Awards at the Joint in the Hard Rock following a 500-strong turnout for the red carpet.
