Today’s daily Strip Scribbles is in abbreviated form because of the incredibly busy weekend of the 2016 ACM Awards and this morning’s opening-day celebrations at MGM Resorts’ new The Park entertainment-and-dining district near New York-New York and Monte Carlo.
But we’ve still dug up a couple of delicious exclusives!
The Miss USA Pageant now on Fox is returning to the Strip on June 5. It’s expected to land back at Planet Hollywood and is just one month after our Miss Nevada America Pageant winner is chosen May 6 at Tropicana (the Miss Nevada USA Pageant winner was crowned in November).
The annual pageant since 1952 winds up selecting the American entrant for the Miss Universe Pageant. Both were owned by real-estate mogul and Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump until he sold them after his headline remarks about Mexican immigrants crossing the border.
Miss USA was here from 2008 through 2013, then moved to Baton Rouge, La., for the 2014 and 2015 contests, where Olivia Jordan of Oklahoma was crowned July 12, 2015. Olivia returns here to crown her successor.
Steve Harvey served as host for the Miss Universe Pageant in December at Planet Hollywood where he made global headlines for incorrectly naming the winner as Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez instead of Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach, who was actually voted to receive the crown.
Although he is signed to a six-year contract with Miss Universe, Steve won’t have the opportunity to redeem himself at Miss USA. Todd Newton, Alex Wehrley and Julie Alexandria served as hosts last time.
NEW RESIDENCIES: A slew of new entertainers are about to call Las Vegas home:
• Nick Jonas, who performed Sunday with Kelsea Ballerini at the ACM Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena for her song “Peter Pan,” is in talks for a DJ residency at Drai’s atop the Cromwell.
• The Beach Boys have expressed interest in a Las Vegas residency, and the group led by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston will take a look at possible showrooms during their April 30 concert at the Smith Center.
• Nick Carter has revealed that the reunited 20th anniversary Backstreet Boys are coming here for a test-run residency. They have a nine-show deal with Live Nation for the trial run. They’re talking about “a big and spectacular show” at the end of this year or early next year after recording their new studio album and a supporting world tour.
SHOW DATES: “Star Crossed Love,” based on a mashup of music and moments from Australian film visionary Baz Luhrmann, will open June 21 in previews, with its premiere set for June 25 at Palazzo.
Then a month later on July 21, “Puppet Up! Uncensored” will premiere at the adjoining Venetian with its off-the-cuff, irreverent, adult-improv, no-hold’s-barred comedy.
Rising country stars Old Dominion celebrated their first ACM Awards win at Green Valley Ranch Resort. The band, which received the award for best New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year, celebrated with a relaxing day at GVR’s pool this afternoon.
“Mindfreak Live!” magician and illusionist Criss Angel finally meets his neighbors — the Blue Man Group at the Luxor, where he also headlines. The star of “Believe” went backstage after the show for a meet-and-greet with the Blue Men and cast members.
Actress Brooke Shields was at Encore Beach Club over the weekend.
