CABO SAN LUCAS — I’m down here on the tip of the Mexican Baja for the next week for much-needed R&R, but news from Las Vegas follows me wherever I go.
Our nightlife czar Victor Drai is spreading his wings south of the border to open a Drai’s nightclub and beach club here in Cabo San Lucas.
Friends here reliably tell me that the deal is “done,” and we can expect the official announcement soon.
Victor follows in the footsteps of “Crazy Girls” producer Norbert Aleman, whose longtime show relocated to Planet Hollywood after the Riviera closed last year.
Norbert is masterminding a large entertainment complex here with gorgeous girls in a gentlemen’s club, restaurant and other nightlife attractions.
And Darin Feinstein, owner of Red Mercury Entertainment who also owns The Viper Room in Los Angeles once owned by Johnny Depp, is opening a Viper Room in Cabo.
Can Las Vegas be far behind? Darin’s company is a co-producer of “MJ Live” at the Rio and Cameo, who began a residency at Westgate Las Vegas last week.
IpMan 3 with Mike Tyson
BACKSTAGE WITH MIKE TYSON: Three-time Grammy-nominated R&B artist and producer Al B Sure received congratulations at Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club in MGM Underground from boxing legend and Henderson resident Mike Tyson on his engagement earlier in the day.
Al told me that he has tour dates to fulfill, then will return with his fiancee home to Las Vegas for the wedding here in one of our chapels.
Mike opened his updated one-man show “Undisputed Truth” at MGM on Thursday and performed three shows before flying to China. He’ll be back next week to continue the run.
Mike departed Sunday for Shanghai, where he will receive the best actor award for his role in “IpMan 3, which also wins best movie.
Mike battles Donnie Yen in the film in what can only be described as remarkable fighting action.
The film has overtaken “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” throughout Asia and has become the highest-grossing film ever in Malaysia. “IpMan 4” is in the planning stages with a return appearance by Iron Mike.
I’ll have my review of Mike’s show later in the week. It’s brutally candid as Mike takes on his drug habits, promoter Don King, his tangles with ex-wife Robin Givens and her mother and of course his pet tiger featured in “The Hangover.”
ST. BALDRICK’S DONATION: Kudos and a big bravo shout-out to Luxor headliner Criss Angel for his generous gift of $100,000 at the St. Baldrick’s Day shaving event at McMullan’s Irish Pub over the weekend.
He shaved our Las Vegas Sun Editor at Large colleague John Katsilometes’ head after John had shaved 5-year-old Elann Saula’s head.
Criss leaves today for a week in Australia to be with his son Johnny Crisstopher, 2, who is battling cancer and will undergo an intense week of chemotherapy.
Criss returns to Las Vegas in a week to unveil what will be the biggest-ever billboard wrap announcing changes to his show “Believe” with Cirque du Soleil at the Luxor. We also will talk with Criss about his cancer fundraising plans with a star-studded concert this fall.
Brian McMullan told me late Sunday night that it looks as if the pub’s noon Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday shaving fundraiser brought in a record $507,000. Many congratulations!
SNEAK ARRIVAL: Celebrity chef Guy Fieri jetted into Las Vegas as NASCAR Weekend began to soft open his new restaurant El Burro Borracho, or the Drunken Donkey, at the Rio. This is Guy’s second Las Vegas venue, the first his Guy Fieri’s Kitchen & Bar at the Linq Hotel.
It wouldn’t be a Guy Fieri restaurant without a signature burger, and, in addition to the regular Mexican dishes with his signature flavorful flair, you will find the burgers El Gringo, El Hombre and Caliente Chorizo Loco. Chef, author and TV host Guy tells us that his new restaurant has nearly 200 seats, with 70 of them in a private dining room for real partying.
What’s even more unique is the decor. The open kitchen and long bar are knockouts in their own right, but running horizontally throughout the restaurant is art in the style of Guy’s tattoos detailing his life story and created by his personal tattoo artist, Craig Frazier.
‘SHARKNADO 4’: Contrary to what was printed elsewhere, the Stratosphere is not the star of the new “Sharknado 4” — the sharks are still the stars! It’s only a two-day shoot here in Las Vegas this week, with the other 28 days back in California.
I was offered a guest role in the movie, probably to be gobbled up alive by a monster shark for hoarding too much caviar! I had to turn down the opportunity and the paycheck, which I would have donated to Keep Memory Alive because of my trip. R&R comes before standing under the lights of a movie camera and memorizing spoof scripts!
WINE WOMAN: Academy Award-winning actress, director, producer and screenwriter Diane Keaton arrives in Las Vegas today for Tuesday’s launch of her chilled red wine The Keaton. She’ll be at Lee’s Discount Liquor near Tivoli Village to kick off Las Vegas sales of her handpicked California cabernet.
“Served over ice, it’s as unpretentious as I am,” Diane says. “My idea of perfect happiness.” Proceeds will benefit Alzheimer’s research here at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, a cause she champions, as her parents were affected by brain disease.
CONGRATULATIONS! We hinted in a post Thursday about who would win the Merlin Award for Best Sleight-of-Hand Magician announced today.
Our congratulations to Doug “Lefty” Leferovich on the honor! Lefty co-stars in Murray Sawchuck’s headliner magic show at Planet Hollywood.
