In a sense, it’s an aging British musical invasion weekend: Rockers Rod Stewart and Billy Idol lead the charge with smooth-as-silk romance royal Engelbert Humperdinck.
Rod is kicking his soccer balls high up into the Colosseum at Caesars Palace; Billy is ripping his T-shirts to go bare-chested at House of Blues; and Engelbert is still raising temperatures with fans throwing away their walkers at Smith Center.
All are heartthrobs despite the fact that Rod is 71, Billy has hit 60, and Eng is closing in on his 80th. The chartbusters are still going strong like a fine vintage wine. Although senior citizens, they are nowhere near over the hill and haven’t passed their prime. Yes, they’ve come of age but can still teach today’s youngsters a thing or two about stardom.
Maybe Pitbull will take time out of his Planet Hollywood gig or Joe Jonas will stop the wheels of steel spinning long enough at Hyde Bellagio to check out the legends?
I’m not joking, but Roseanne Barr and Jo Koy will be when they standup for comedy this weekend. Roseanne is at South Point and Jo at Treasure Island. Funnyman Gabriel Iglesias rounds out the comedy trio with his Mirage show.
Most of the valley’s spotlights will focus on tonight’s Cirque du Soleil “One Night for One Drop” spectacular at Smith Center with Leona Lewis and Miles “ Baby Boogaloo” Brown. Our blue carpet rundown was posted Thursday and our sneak preview this morning. Miles, 11 and the star of ABC’s “Black-ish,” is our youngest headliner performer this weekend.
Other attractions include the Monster Jam truck championships at Sam Boyd Stadium and Wizard World Comic Con with “Dr. Who” stars and my New York pals Barry Bostwick and Tara Reid.
Remember that when the lights go out at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, it’s not a signal for bedtime. It’s the start of Earth Hour for the Venetian and Palazzo commitment to sustainability.
Being honest, there are nights when I should go to bed that early because the next morning, I do feel as old as the hills, probably as do Rod and Eng. But, here in Las Vegas, we’re all still adolescents. We are mature, but I think this city brings out the second childhood in us. Let’s show that we’re in our prime and roll out this week’s edition of the Royal Robin Rundown:
