Bones found in remote petroglyph canyon in Northern Nevada

CARSON CITY — Authorities in northern Nevada are trying to identify skeletal remains found by a hiker in a remote canyon famous for rock art petroglyphs.

The Storey County sheriff’s office said the remains were found Tuesday near the head of Lagomarsino Canyon, north of Virginia City.

Deputies said the bones appeared to be human and may have been there for several years.

Medical examiners will work to determine a cause of death.

Lagomarsino Canyon is in the National Register of Historic Places as a Nevada rock art site. It has more than 2,200 rock art panels dating back about 10,000 years.
