People wait in line for help with unemployment benefits at the One-Stop Career Center, Tuesday, March 17, 2020, in Las Vegas. Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation and its partner organizations, like the One-Stop Career Center, have seen an increase in traffic due to the coronavirus.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation has announced the opening today of a new unemployment insurance call center.

The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and can be reached at 800-603-9671. The call center will be operated by Alorica, a vendor already operating two call centers in Nevada.

“We are proud to be able to support Nevadans during this difficult time, helping to answer questions and guide them through this critical process,” said Colleen Beers, the president of North America operations for Alorica.

“We applaud the State of Nevada and DETR for making it easier for people in crisis to receive assistance,” Beers said.

Nevadans with last names starting with A-K are asked to file claims on Sundays, last names L-R on Mondays and last names S-Z on Tuesdays. Wednesdays through Saturdays are “open for all to initiate or renew claims online,” according to a DETR news release.

Department Director Tiffany Tyler-Garner said she understands the need for people to be able connect to a human in the process of applying for unemployment insurance.

“Our goal with the new call center is to alleviate the enormous call volume flooding our current call centers,” Tyler-Garner said. “We will continue to address concerns as we work to serve Nevadans during this unprecedented time."

Unemployment in Nevada has skyrocketed due to the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent shutdown of all nonessential businesses.

In a news conference Tuesday, Gov. Steve Sisolak said 300,000 Nevadans have applied for unemployment benefits in the last 30 days.
