Top local basketball player Daishen Nix opts for G League

A local player is blazing a new path, one taken by more and more high-level basketball prospects in lieu of the traditional college route.

Five-star point guard Daishen Nix, who played high school basketball at Trinity International School in Las Vegas, announced today he is decommiting from UCLA and signing with the G League, the development league for the NBA.

"I think it was the right thing for me because it was a family thing and a myself thing," Nix told the Los Angeles Times. "Playing in G League is basically getting me ready for the NBA draft. It's just one step below the NBA."

The G League has created a new pathway for high school players. Players need to be one year removed from high school to be eligible for the NBA Draft, and in most cases, that has meant going to college for a season in what is known as a one-and-done. Now, players can opt for the G League and be paid for their efforts.

Nix is the third player from the 2020 class to forgo college in favor the G League, following No. 1-rated prospect Jalen Green and forward Isaiah Todd.

Nix, a 6-foot, 5-inch guard, committed to UCLA in August. He is the No. 20 player in the ESPN rankings of Class of 2020 players.
