Cheyenne’s defense holds strong to eliminate Palo Verde

The Cheyenne High basketball team connected on nine 3-pointers tonight to upset host Palo Verde 59-53 in the Mountain Region quarterfinals.

“We aren’t a 3-point shooting team, so that was huge for us,” Desert Shields coach Teral Fair said.

Even more important was the stingy defense played by Cheyenne in limiting Palo Verde — a 20-win team in the regular season — to its second-lowest scoring output of the season.

“We think our defense is as good as anyone’s,” Fair said.

Junior Glen Taylor Jr., who has recently grabbed scholarship offers from USC and Washington State, had 15 points for Cheyenne. Kyree Hayes had 12 and Andrick Santillan scored 11.

Cheyenne plays Desert Pines next week in the regional semifinals.
