An officer investigating a traffic accident was injured this morning when another vehicle crashed into his patrol unit, according to Henderson Police.

The officer, whose name was not released, was finishing a report on a crash that happened about 8 a.m. near Green Valley Parkway and Sunset Road, police said.

While the officer was sitting in his patrol vehicle with the emergency lights activated, a 2018 Hyundai headed east on Sunset drove around a disabled vehicle and hit the patrol vehicle, police said. The impact ejected the officer from his vehicle, police said.

The officer was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, police said.

The driver of the Hyundai, Joseph Allen Smith, 27, was arrested on a count of DUI and other traffic-related counts, police said.

Smith was being held at the Henderson Detention Center pending an initial court appearance at which he is expected to have an attorney named to represent him.

The intersection was closed for more than three hours as police investigated the secondary crash, police said.
