Smith’s grocery stores in the Las Vegas Valley have moved to limit purchases of certain items as coronavirus cases surge, according to a company spokeswoman.

Kroger Co., parent company of the Smith’s brand, last week began limiting customer purchases of toilet paper, paper towels, disinfecting wipes and hand soap, spokeswoman Aubriana Martindale said.

Customers are allowed to purchase two units of each item per visit. The restrictions, which are being enforced by the honor system, are for in-store and online purchases.

Earlier in the pandemic, stores nationwide experienced shortages as shoppers hoarded certain products, including toilet paper.

As COVID-19 cases have increased in some areas, including in Nevada, the supermarket chain wanted to be proactive, Martindale said.

There are about three dozen Smith’s stores in the valley. Kroger is an Ohio-based company with multiple grocery store brands across the country.
