Dean Marc Kahn, MD, MBA, gives opening remarks during the UNLV Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine Class of 2024 White Coat Ceremony Friday, Feb. 25, 2022.

An ambulatory care clinic will be built at UNLV’s Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine in the Las Vegas Medical District.

Gov. Steve Sisolak and the state Interim Finance Committee awarded the medical school $40 million for the clinic, officials announced today. The committee also awarded $30 million for a pathology lab at the school.

“An ambulatory care clinic will help change the paradigm of care in Southern Nevada. It will provide coordinated care to patients, including mental and behavioral health, all in one place,” Dr. Marc J. Kahn, dean of the medical school and vice president for health affairs at UNLV, said in a statement.

The clinic will have operating rooms for outpatient surgery and will be staffed by specialists, including those working in mental health, officials said.

The lab will accelerate the delivery of critical test results from the medical school campus to University Medical Center, strengthening the relationship between the university and Clark County-operated hospital, officials said.

“This lab will allow us to turn around test results faster, as well as provide valuable training opportunities for young doctors performing original research,” Kahn said.

The medical school expects to move into its permanent building — across from Valley Hospital on Shadow Lane — in November, officials said. The ambulatory clinic and lab are in the design phase.

In a statement, UNLV President Keith Whitfield said, “I want to thank Gov. Sisolak and the Nevada Legislature for their leadership in making this earnest investment in healthcare for Southern Nevada. This funding will directly help patients in need and be the foundation for important medical research.”
