Sports Illustrated writes about Findlay College Prep

It might not be the most flattering of pieces, but Sports Illustrated writes about Findlay College Prep's national basketball championship in this week's edition of the magazine.

We provide a link to to the story here. Click on the headline to review it.

Writer Phil Taylor recently visited the house -- a short walk up a hill from the Henderson International School, with which the third-year hoops program is affiliated -- in which the Pilots live.

He mentions team founder Cliff Findlay, the former UNLV center and Las Vegas-area automobile magnate, and examines his relationship as a Rebels booster to the founder of a local powerhouse prep team. Findlay told Taylor that the Pilots are being run, by coach Mike Peck and assistant Todd Simon, in accordance with NCAA rules.

Space might have been an issue, but Taylor fails to mention that any Pilot who lags in the classroom, by missing a paper or not doing well in an exam, is suspended from playing. That happened to Victor Rudd this past season.

The article mentions that the team eats at a buffet on the Strip once a week. Technically, the South Point is on the Strip. But it's quite a bit south of all the lights and glitz and glamour.

Findlay (33-0) finished the season Sunday afternoon with a 74-66 victory over Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy (40-1) in the title game of the ESPN RISE National High School Invitational at Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda, Md.
