Fighter on Hatton-Pacquiao undercard held on federal gun charge

Austin boxer James Kirkland, who is scheduled to fight Michael Walker on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton's title fight on May 2, was handed over to federal authorities Tuesday to face a gun-possession charge.

Kirkland, 25, was arrested Sunday by U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents and Austin police after finding a loaded .40-caliber Glock pistol in the center console of his Cadillac, according to federal court documents. Kirkland, who was on probation for a 2003 armed robbery, was charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.

"I don't really know anything yet, so I really can't comment, but I'm looking into it," Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com earlier in the week.
