Bishop Gorman High School quarterback Tate Martell poses during an off-season workout at the school Monday, Jan. 12, 2015.

It won’t be easy.

The Bishop Gorman High football team’s quest to repeat as mythical national champions will include facing two teams ranked in the preseason top-25 in the initial six days of the season.

Gorman was ranked No. 3 this week in the MaxPreps-CBSSports.com Top 25 Early Contenders, the first high school rankings to be released. The Gaels, who last season went undefeated, including beating six national opponents in consecutive weeks to open the season, begin their title defense Aug. 29 by hosting Chandler of Arizona. Chandler is ranked No. 17.

Six days later, Gorman travels to Utah to face No. 13 Bingham, the back-to-back large-school Utah state champions who Gorman needed overtime to defeat last season.

Gorman returns some key components from last season’s team, including junior quarterback Tate Martell, who was the MaxPreps national sophomore of the year in 2014 after passing for 2,537 yards and 40 touchdowns with just two interceptions. He has scholarship offers from the likes of Alabama, Michigan, Texas A & M and USC.

Other key returners include: UNLV commits Julio Garcia and Jaron Caldwell on the offensive line, wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey, a top 2017 recruiting target, and defensive lineman Haskell Garrett.

Kenny Sanchez, the defensive coordinator the past six seasons, was elevated to head coach after his brother, Tony Sanchez, was hired as the UNLV coach.

De La Salle of Northern California was ranked No. 1. Miami Central of Florida came in at No. 2.
