CityCenter fire station groundbreaking today

A groundbreaking will be held this afternoon for a new Clark County fire station at the MGM Mirage CityCenter that's being paid for by MGM Mirage.

The event, which will feature Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid, Fire Chief Steven Smith and MGM executives, will begin at 3 p.m. today.

The new station, known as CityCenter Fire Station 32, will be the first in the county's history to be built on a resort property, according to Scott Allison, public information officer for the Clark County Fire Department.

The fire station is part of an estimated $28 million in public improvements that MGM Mirage agreed to fund as part of the May 2006 development agreement with the county, Allison said.

"The CityCenter development agreement was a first of its kind for our community, and has paved the way for similar agreements with other new resort properties," Reid said in a prepared statement.

Such agreements help offset the impact of a major development on the county's public service infrastructure, he said.

MGM Mirage is paying to both build and equip the fire station in the 67-acre CityCenter site.

Smith said the new fire station in the heart of the strip will meet the goal of having a six-minute response time to any call the fire department receives.

The last major fire on the strip was on Jan. 25 at the Monte Carlo, which is just south of the new fire station.
