Ex-state employee pleads guilty to embezzlement

A former Nevada state employee, 30-year-old John E. Delap III of Las Vegas, has pled guilty to two counts of theft for embezzling $60,698.54, said Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto.

Delap's sentencing on the two felony counts has been set for Sept. 9 in District Court Dept. 15.

Delap was deputy executive director of the Nevada State Board of Osteopathic Medicine. An investigation by the attorney general's Bureau of Criminal Justice revealed that Delap had embezzled more than $60,000 of the board's money between November 2004 and January 2006.

Delap forged checks made payable to himself and others, illegally obtained and used a state board credit card to purchase personal items and embezzled additional funds to pay off credit card debt and hide the embezzlement, the attorney general said.

Each count carries a possible sentence of one to 10 years in prison.
