Tark pulling for the (free) ticket master

NOW

Well, it's 4 p.m. on Opening Day, and although I can't wait to see the New York Post headline after the Yanks' CC $abathia got lit up like a Christmas tree by the Orioles, my nominee for top quote of the day actually goes to an old basketball coach.

When writing about tonight's NCAA men's basketball championship game between North Carolina and Michigan State for his blog on the Sun Web site, former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian was his usual candid self.

"I would like to see the Spartans win because Izzo got me these incredible tickets," Tark said.

Let's hear Jay Bilas analyze that.

THEN

Opening Day memory: Wrigley Field, 1973. We ditched school to watch the Cubs beat the Expos on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Mike Marshall was pitching, Rick Monday was batting and Tony La Russa was pinch-running.

After watching La Russa stomp on home plate and get mobbed by his teammates as if he actually did something, it occurred to me that a walk-off sacrifice fly can be exciting if you are willing to open your mind a bit.
