Remembering an interesting chat with Bruce Snyder

NOW

The last time I talked to Bruce Snyder, the former UNLV assistant football coach -- and head coach at Arizona State, Cal and Utah State -- we had a fascinating chat about the psychology of football. About how while it's easy to get up for games, it's difficult to achieve an even emotional keel. Snyder's thoughts were so insightful that I used them as the basis for a column.

He seemed more interesting than most football coaches. Like you could talk to him about stuff that didn't pertain to X's and O's. That if you didn't mention him going 11-1 at Arizona State and taking the Sun Devils to the Rose Bowl and coaching all those first-round NFL draft picks and being named college football's coach of year, it wouldn't matter. He seemed like the kind of guy who would be just as happy taking about the book he had just read.

Bruce Snyder died Monday after a bout with cancer. He was 69. I feel fortunate that our paths crossed, if only briefly.

THEN

First Nick Adenhart. Then Harry Kalas, the voice of the Phillies (and NFL Films). Then Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, who was found dead under a truck today.

Man, what baseball really needs is a day where nobody dies.
