Another side of Dennis Finfrock

NOW

I was telling somebody the other day, after learning that former UNLV arena and interim athletic director Dennis Finfrock had lost his long fight to Parkinson's disease, that I might be the only person who liked both Dennis and former Rebels basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian.

If you weren't around back then, Finfrock was viewed by many as the chief lieutenant for Dr. Bob Maxson, the UNLV president who didn't see eye-to-eye with his basketball coach.

Getting along with both Finfrock and Tarkanian was akin to liking both the Hatfields and the McCoys, at least in those days.

Turns out I wasn't the only one, based on an e-mail I received from a fellow named Charlie Scott:

Mr. Kantowski:

I just wanted to let you know I appreciated you writing about the side of Dennis Finfrock that not many people chose not to remember. I, too, have always liked Jerry Tarkanian and believe he was a great asset for UNLV. In the early 1980s, when I was a broke UNLV student, some buddies and I worked for Mr. Finfrock at the Convention Center, Thomas and Mack Center and some fights at Caesars Palace. Mr. Finfrock didn't know my name, but if he saw me walking down Harmon Ave. he would pull over and tell me to get in the car. He gave me a ride to wherever I was walking; he was always pleasant and he treated me great. How many men today in his position would go out of their way to give some broke college kid that worked for minimum wage a ride?

Not many, Charlie, not many.

THEN

I saw over the weekend where somebody in Minnesota had baked the world's largest cupcake.

No word yet on whether the Penn State football team will try to schedule it.
