51s blow late lead in Sacramento

The Las Vegas 51s had a three-run lead in the seventh inning against the host Sacramento River Cats Saturday night but could not hold on in a 9-8 defeat.

The 51s (5-11) didn’t go down without a fight.

They had two singles and a walk to load the bases with two outs in the ninth inning, but shortstop Angel Sanchez struck out looking to end the game.

Las Vegas scored four runs in the seventh inning, three coming on a bases-clearing double from Howie Clark, to take a 6-3 advantage. But Sacramento scored five runs in its half of the inning to retake the lead.

The 51s responded by scoring twice in the top of the eighth inning on RBIs from Aaron Mathews and Buck Coats to even the score at 8-8.

Sacramento scored the winning run on a Chris Denorfia single in its half of the eighth to take the first game in the four-game series.

The teams will be back in action at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
