51s losing streak reaches four

The Las Vegas 51s dropped another one-run game to the Sacramento River Cats on Tuesday afternoon.

Brett Cecil and Jonah Bayliss combined to limit Sacramento to four hits, but it was not enough to prevent the River Cats from picking up a 3-2 victory to cap a four-game series sweep.

Three of Sacramento’s four victories were by one run — 9-8 in the series opener on Saturday and 2-1 in 13 innings on Sunday. Las Vegas, which fell to 5-14 overall, is 2-6 in one-run games.

Sacramento scored all three of its runs in the third inning off Cecil. Chris Denorfia’s two-run single gave the River Cats a 2-0 advantage and speedster Eric Patterson stole home for the eventual game-winning run.

Catcher Kyle Phillips, who led Las Vegas with three hits, doubled and scored on a single from Scott Campbell to cut the 51s’ deficit to 3-1 in the fourth inning. Las Vegas added another run in the fifth when Howie Clark singled, went to third on a Randy Ruiz double and scored on a wild pitch.

Las Vegas has its first scheduled off day Wednesday before they host the Salt Lake City Buzz for four games Thursday to Sunday.
