Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point..
Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.
West Virginia plus-7 at Texas: $660 to win $600 : West Virginia is peaking at the right time, scoring more than 100 points in crushing a quality Iowa State team earlier this week. The Mountaineers have won four of their last five games, also beating Baylor (on the road), Oklahoma and Kansas State — all teams likely head to the NCAA Tournament. Bob Huggins has done a masterful job in coaching, giving guard Juwan Staten the freedom to blossom into one of the Big 12 Conference’s best offensive players at 18.3 points and six assists per game. Sophomore Eron Harris is averaging 17.4 points per game in combining with Staten for a tough-to-guard one-two punch.
Now for Texas, which is favored for a reason.
The Longhorns are ranked in the top-20 and have an impressive 19-5 record, which includes a double-digit win at West Virginia. The are fifth in the nation in rebounding and beat powerhouse Kansas by 12 points in their last home game. And West Virginia won’t have answers on the inside for 6-foot-8 post Jonathan Holmes, Texas’ leading scorer.
Still, I’ll take the points with Huggy Bear’s team on the rise. But, be warned: My play Thursday lost by 30 points.
Standings: Bern (10-5, $11,050), Keefer (4-7, $8,517.50), Brewer (4-7-2, $8,270)
