Vegas Play of the Day: Brewers at Cardinals

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point . Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

St. Louis Cardinals minus-150 vs. Milwaukee Brewers: $600 to win $400 Matt Garza was scheduled to be the Milwaukee starting pitcher today at St. Louis, but was called into emergency duty Sunday in the Brewers’ 17-inning victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mike Fiers, or a Triple-A call-up, is likely to start for The Brew Crew. Take the Cardinals, but don’t list the pitcher — this way, you get action regardless of who the Brewers start.

Milwaukee (17-34) has the worst record in baseball and has won just eight times on the road. When you factor in the travel of leaving Milwaukee late for St. Louis and the lingering effects of playing a marathon extra inning game, don’t expect the Brewers to have much left. If even Milwaukee was at full strength, they’d be no match for the Cardinals, whose 33 wins are the most in the National League.

St. Louis starter Jaime Garcia has just two starts since being activated off the disabled list about 10 days ago. In both outings, he’s had pitch control issues, giving up two home runs and walking five in 13 innings. Starting against an exhausted Milwaukee team, though, could solve those problems.

Standings: Bern (80-71-1, $11,140), Keefer (81-81-2, $8,967), Brewer (70-84-3, $1,475)
