Catcher Erik VanMeetren is shown during UNLV baseball practice at Earl E. Wilson Baseball Stadium Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015. The UNLV baseball team hosts Nebraska to open the season on Friday.

A pair of UNLV baseball's locals picked up honors from the Mountain West this morning as catcher Erik VanMeetren and pitcher Kenny Oakley were named to the league’s first and second teams, respectively.

VanMeetren, a Bishop Gorman High grad, led the team with five home runs and also had 26 RBI and 34 runs scored to go with his .300 batting average. Oakley, a Coronado High grad, finished with a 3.39 earned run average and 57 strikeouts in 61 innings while compiling a 3-5 record.

The Rebels finished the regular season at 24-29 overall and 10-20 in Mountain West play.

UNR, the regular season champ, swept the major awards. Sophomore outfielder/pitcher Trenton Brooks won the Tony Gwynn Player of the Year award, junior pitcher Christian Stolo was named the Pitcher of the Year and Wolf Pack coach Jay Johnson was tabbed the Coach of the Year. UNR’s Cal Stevenson tied with New Mexico’s Cory Voss for the Freshman of the Year award.

UNLV’s chance to make up for a disappointing regular season is today in Reno at the Mountain West tournament. The No. 6 seed Rebels have a play-in game against No. 7 seed San Jose State this morning, and if they win they would be in the double-elimination field and play No. 3 seed Fresno State at 3 p.m. today.

The games all stream on the Mountain West Network and Campus Insiders.
