Vegas Play of the Day: New England at Arizona

Bill Belichick

Winslow Townson / AP

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick watches action from the sideline in the first half of an NFL game against the New York Giants on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, in Foxborough, Mass.

We’ve entered the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

New England Patriots plus-9 at Arizona Cardinals: $770 to win $700: No Brady. No Gronk. No problem ...seriously.

When was the last time a Bill Belichick coached team was a 9-point betting underdog? And when was the last time that time had the best odds — 7ot-1 — to win the Super Bowl.

Sure, that Pats will be without some of their best players, and sure it’s tough to play at Arizona, but by no means are the Patriots going to lose by double digits. Come on — this is Belichick, the best coach of this era.

Belichick seems to always find the players and come up with a game plan to win, or hopefully tonight to cover the betting number. He constantly takes players who were cut loose by other teams and plugs them into a system.

Tonight, with Tom Brady serving a four-game suspension, first-time starter Jimmy Garoppolo will take the reigns. Brady’s a multi-time Super Bowl champion and future Hall of Famer, and Garoppolo has little experience. But he has Belichick. Belichick will come up with a game plan to make Garoppolo look great. Remember what he did with Matt Cassel?

Cassel played one season for an injured Brady in New England, passing for 3,700 yards and 21 touchdowns with a 67-percent completion percentage in 2008 in the best season of his career. Cassel went from USC backup to New England starter, to mega-contract with the Kansas Chiefs. He’s been average at best during his professional career with the exception of the season he spelled Brady. Thanks, coach Belichick.

Current Standings: Bern (9-7, $11,292), Keefer (11-10-1, $9721), Brewer (9-9, $9,405)
