Published on Wed, Aug 13, 2014 (3:02 p.m.)

Hawthorne, Nev. – On September 13th hikers from throughout Nevada and the United States will participate in an “official” Nevada 150 Sesquicentennial Event honoring those who lost their lives in the tragedy which occurred on September 11th. The annual Mt. Grant Challenge will host up to 150 participants who will tackle the 17 mile “challenge” to scale the highest peak in Mineral County.
The challenge begins at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday and will offer some of the region’s most pristine landscapes. At the summit one can experience a 130 mile panoramic view on a clear day and a spectacular glimpse of Walker Lake. Participants will also receive an official 9/11 Challenge finisher’s coin which will commemorate Nevada’s 150 anniversary.
Supported by local residents, businesses and the Fair and Recreation Board the event offers the unique opportunity to scale Mt. Grant with the aid and encouragement of other participants. Although hikers are requested to carry their own supplies, there will be check-in stations and emergency services available. Individual and team registrations are available on the organization’s website, 911challenge.org.
Hawthorne, situated in central Nevada, is the site of the world’s largest ammunition plant and is proclaimed, “America’s Patriotic Home.” Proceeds from this event support the Veteran’s Memorial Park located on highway 95 which flies one of the largest American flags in the state.
