Workplace productivity recognized

The Administrative Services Division of the U.S. Department of Energy's Nevada Operations Office and the North Las Vegas Fire Department have won the top U.S. Senate Productivity Awards.

The awards program, which began in Nevada in 1988, recognizes businesses that have attained high levels of productivity and improved customer satisfaction and business results by implementing total-quality-management programs.

These are organizations that are "well on their way" because of committed leaders and sound, systematic approaches as opposed to reaction-based problem solving, according to organizers.

Wednesday night's awards banquet was the culmination of a day-long series of workshops at the eighth annual Senate Productivity Conference. Topics addressed included leadership, strategic planning, change management, empowerment, team building, small business, continuous improvement and communication.

DOE's Administrative Services Division is headed by Ken Powers, assistant manager for administration. The North Las Vegas Fire Department is led by Chief Michael Massey.

For the first time this year, officials handed out a Best Practices Award to recognize a business that has shown outstanding progress in one of seven assessment criteria.

The recipient was the Administrative Services Division of the U.S. Department of Energy's Nevada Operations Office, which demonstrated "best practices" in the Human Resources development and management area.

Organizers said the organization's performance in the criteria reflects a prevention-based approach that ensures cooperation and participation of employees at all levels. The award cited sustained improvement and performance.

Conference officials hope other Nevada companies will be able to learn from DOE's Administrative Services Division how to improve their human resources development and management program, said Larry McAlister, marketing co-chairman for the conference.
