Housing fast facts

* POPULARITY -- Approximately 18 million people -- over 7 percent of the population -- live in 7.3 manufactured homes. Through November, 1995, the U.S. Bureau of Census reports that one out of every four single-family housing starts and one out of three new single-family homes sold was a manufactured home.

* GROWTH -- Last year, 92 corporations shipped nearly 400,000 homes from 281 plants. This represents an increase of 11.7 percent over 1994. In addition, October, 1995, marked the highest shipment month in 20 years with shipments of 32,663 homes.

* SALES -- Manufactured housing retail sales were estimated at $11.9 billion in 1995.

* PRICE -- The average sales price of a manufactured home was $33,500 in 1994. Single-section homes average $23,900, while multi-section homes average $42,900.

* ECONOMIC IMPACT -- The estimated economic impact from manufactured housing was $23.3 billion. The economic impact reflects the economic activity generated by the production and sale of a home -- this includes salaries, goods purchased and auxiliary services.

* SAFETY -- All manufactured homes are built to the federal HUD Code, with each home going through a rigorous inspection process before being certified and sold. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the HUD Code.
