Letter: Hispanic community sorely in need of strong leadership

I have yet to know who our so-called Hispanic leaders are. Our Hispanic leaders should have shown public concern with the wrongful death of a young Hispanic man caused by two drunken off-duty police officers. Instead they met privately with Sheriff Jerry Keller to discuss concerns such as preferential treatment when a crime involves an officer.

I would like to see some sort of action that would show the Hispanic community that we have a leader who is not afraid to stand up and be counted. Someone who will voice the concerns publicly and not privately.

I greatly admire the African-American community and their leaders. They have voiced their concerns and have made their presence known. I have read how other minority communities and Europeans have joined with the African-Americans to voice their concerns about the Metropolitan Police Department. The only Hispanic I have read about and seen on the news has been Al Gallego. I am proud to see that there are those who are not afraid to speak publicly. I hope to see more Hispanics become involved and be counted. Stand up, speak up and make a difference in our community. Viva la Raza!
