Ex-Gov. Russell’s wife dies at 80

Mrs. Russell showed a longtime commitment to the Nevada State Museum and served for more than 20 years as a trustee. The museum's textile and research center was dedicated in her name in 1993. She also gave the museum her prize collection of pioneer Nevada women's dresses.

Mrs. Russell, the daughter of a prominent Nevada judge, taught school in Silver City and Ely for several years. The Yerington native married Russell in 1939.

An Ely newspaper publisher for nearly two decades, Charles Russell also served in the state Assembly and Senate for 12 years, as a congressman for two years, and as governor from 1951 to 1958. He died in 1989.

Gov. Bob Miller described Mrs. Russell as "the matriarch of one of the state's outstanding families, and you can see her character and strength in the success of her family."

Sandy Miller said that when she became Nevada's first lady, "no one was more supportive when I needed advice than Mrs. Russell."

Survivors include sons Todd and Clark, both of Carson City, David of Reno, Craig of Dallas and a daughter, Virginia Sakal of Ithaca, N.Y., plus numerous grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peters Episcopal Church.
