MLB Roundup: Seattle’s Piniella first victim of umpires’ get-tough policy

Umpires did not wait long to get tough under their get-tough policy.

A day after umps vowed they wouldn't take any lip from anyone on the field, Seattle Mariners manager Lou Piniella was thrown out of Tuesday's exhibition game against Milwaukee in Chandler, Ariz.

What prompted the rare spring training ejection? Piniella merely asked second base umpire Ted Hendry to stop chatting with young shortstop Andy Sheets.

"I told him, 'Leave him alone. Let him concentrate,'" Piniella said. "He (Hendry) thought I was getting on him."

Major league umpires, still upset over the Roberto Alomar spitting incident, announced Monday that they don't plan to stand for any guff from players or managers this season.

"That's exactly what Hendry told me, that they were going to be tougher," Piniella said.

Hendry left the ballpark without speaking to reporters. Brewers manager Phil Garner supported Piniella's side of the story.

"Lou said, 'Don't talk to my shortstop, let him concentrate,' and Ted said, 'You're outta here,'" Garner said. "There was no cursing, no nothing. It had nothing to do with an argument or with a play. We couldn't believe it. He didn't do anything."

"So, that's the way it's going to be," Garner said.

John Jaha homered twice and Jose Valentin and Dave Nilsson also homered for Milwaukee, which led 10-1 after two innings.
