Padres, Mariners may deal

Irabu, the Japanese pitcher whose rights were awarded last week to San Diego, has refused to negotiate with the Padres. San Diego is said to be discussing a possible trade with Seattle, but agent Don Nomura said Irabu would refuse to sign with the Mariners.

"It's the Yankees or staying home," Nomura said Tuesday.

Padres president Larry Lucchino has said he didn't acquire Irabu's rights to trade him, but a lawyer familiar with the case, speaking on the condition he not be identified, said San Diego and Seattle have been talking about a possible trade.
