Roger Brown dies of cancer

"It's very unfortunate," Reggie Miller said. "Roger has meant so much to this city, to this franchise and to all the people's lives he has touched through the years. ... We know he's going to be looking over all us Hoosiers and Pacer fans and touching us for the rest of our lives."

Pacers coach Larry Brown announced the death after Indiana defeated Boston 98-95 on Tuesday night.

"We lost a real good friend. Everyone knew how sick he was and we were hoping for the best," the coach said.

The NBA banned Brown after he was accused of associating with gambler Jack Molinas, who later was convicted of bribing basketball players. A high school star in Brooklyn, N.Y., Brown never played a college game because of his association with Molinas. But he averaged 18 points in eight ABA seasons, and his 1,058 points is still the third highest in franchise history.
