School’s website honored

Gibson Elementary School is an official "Cool School."

The Henderson school's Internet site is being highlighted this week and next as Education World's Cool School of the Week, honored for its creativity, content, graphic elements, originality and topics.

Education World is an Internet education site and chooses one school each week to be designated as its Cool School.

Glenace Melton, a math and technology coordinator at Gibson, created and maintains the site. She said being chosen as this week's Cool School is "an honor because the site was chosen based on its creativity and content, so that's a compliment."

Melton designed the page around the school's nickname, the Gold Miners, and offers one section for readers titled "Polished Gold." That area is divided into different literary genres, featuring student-written pieces on such topics as nonfiction reports, personal experiences, poetry and other essays.

"The latest personal experience (essay to be featured) is exciting," Melton said. "It's written by a boy who starts his story out with, 'Have you ever stood in the street and watched your house burn?'"

The rest of the story can be read on the school's site at http:// members.aol. com/glenacem/index.htm.

Melton said communication is the goal of the Internet site.

"We're hoping other students around the world will read (the information) and respond," she said, noting students have already received comments from around the country, including Hawaii.

"Student involvement on the Internet is vital for today's world of communication and technology," said Bob York, Education World executive producer.

"We feel it is important to recognize schools who understand this and choose to make the Internet a part of their educational process."

As other schools get networked to the Internet, Gibson's Internet site will serve as a pilot site for the Clark County School District.
