John McCarron: Fong averages 245 to take tourney

HOLDEN FONG (978) dominated the field at the Nevada Tournament Bowling Alliance's (NTBA) Wild Dog Match Play held at Mahoney's Bowling Center. Fong averaged an incredible 245 to take home $425.

Second place went to Gary Trosen (922), who also won two skins pots totaling $310. Steve Born (955) took the third spot and a skin for $240. Fourth place went to Troy Bridges (897, $90) while Steve Tollefson (920, $90) placed fifth. High games went to Born, 279; Fong, 258; Steve Tollefson, 255; and Rick Benard, 245.

The PBA is back at the Showboat starting Sunday for a week of competition featuring the best bowlers in the world. Walter Ray Williams is the defending champion. One of the most popular events connected with the pro tour is the pro-am event, starting Sunday. This side tournament features an amateur teamed with a pro in doubles format. Their combined scores determines where the amateur places, with $1000 going to the winner. Also, all entrants will take home a new bowling ball. For more information, call the Showboat at 385-9150.

The fourth Mahoney's Bowling Center match play tournament takes place Saturday at 1 p.m. The format is a 3-game qualifier with handicap, with more than a third of the field advancing to match play. Dave Gibbs is the defending champion. Entry fee is only $25 with a new ball to be randomly raffled. Call Trish Marshall at 657-2750 for details.

The next stop of the Senior Scratch Bowlers Tour is Sunday at Sam's Town, starting at 10 am. Call Gary Walters at 464-8466 for reservations.
