Nevada gets $2.6 mil. for victims

Nevada will receive $2.6 million from the U.S. Justice Department to assist crime victims in 1997-98.

"Every penny of this $2.6 million grant comes out of the pockets of convicted federal criminals, not taxpayers," Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Wednesday in announcing the funds.

The grant came from the Crime Victims Fund, which was authorized by the 1984 Victims of Crime Act. The fund receives fines, penalty assessments and bond forfeitures from federal convicts. The Justice Department's Office for Victims of Crime distributes the funds to states, which in turn fund local programs.

From 1986 through 1994, more than $477 million in grants were distributed nationwide.

Southern Nevada programs currently funded by this grant are Metro Police, Safe House Inc. in Henderson and Community Action Against Rape in Las Vegas.

Applications are being received through May 5 to get a piece of the 1997 grant. Call Chris Graham in the Child and Family Services Division of the state Human Resources Department at (702) 688-1628.
