NFL Notes: SD puts in offer to Moon

SUN WIRE REPORTS

The San Diego Chargers offered free agent quarterback Warren Moon a contract on Wednesday to serve as backup to Stan Humphries.

GM Bobby Beathard would not comment on specifics, but there were reports it would be worth $1.5 million for one year, with an option year.

Beathard was not optimistic about landing Moon, though, because Moon is believed to be seeking a contract paying close to $2 million per season. Moon was offered $500,000 by the Vikings, far from the $4.3 million he collected in 1996.

If the Chargers sign Moon, they'd release backup quarterback Sean Salisbury.

"I feel sorry for Sean, but it's just one of those things," Beathard said.

"Warren wants to compete for the job, just like Sean Salisbury would like to be No. 1," Beathard said. "Stan's our quarterback. We'll see where it goes from here. That's the decision."

* EAGLES GET EVERITT: The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to announce the signing of center Steve Everitt to a five-year contract today, beating out the New York Jets for the former Baltimore Raven. Sources familiar with the negotiations said Everitt, 26, agreed late Tuesday to a five-year, $11.5 million contract that includes a $2 million signing bonus. The agreement gives the Eagles a 6-foot-5, 290-pound anchor for an offensive line in dire need of improvement.

* MILLIONAIRE PUNTER: Denver Broncos punter Tom Rouen has agreed to a three-year, $1.35 million contract, the Denver Post reported today. Rouen, a former University of Colorado star from Lakewood, considered free-agent offers from Detroit and St. Louis before returning to Denver. "Things were getting real close with Detroit, and I called Denver and told them what was going on, and within five minutes we had the whole thing done," Rouen said. "I'm real happy. I get a considerable pay raise and signed with the team I grew up with."
