In addition, the Whalers sent a second-round pick in the 1997 NHL draft and a third-round pick in 1998 to the Flames for a third-round Calgary pick in 1997.
"Steve Chiasson is an experienced defenseman, a quality defenseman," Whalers general manager Jim Rutherford said. "He'll upgrade our defense and make our team stronger. He has a good four or five years ahead of him."
Chiasson, 29, is an offensive defenseman with 82 goals and 259 points in 639 NHL games. Featherstone, 29, is a physical, journeyman blueliner with 18 goals and 76 points in 371 games.
Domenichelli, a 20-year-old forward, was one of the top prospects in Hartford's system.
"It's hard in a sense to give Hnat up," Rutherford said. "He's a good prospect and I believe he will be a good NHL player. But we know we're getting a good defenseman."
