Where You Stand for March 6, 1997

To leave a comment for the Where You Stand column call (702) 259-4044.

I would just like to comment on the driver who feels terror on the highways. Maybe he is unaware that California drivers forced the automobile industry to add the third brake light due to the tailgaters in California. Also, the California drivers do not use the directional lights because they're afraid that other cars will take advantage of them. Tell them, please, don't get a license here in Nevada.

As a wife, mother and sister, I have to speak out and ask what about abused men? I have seen firsthand the physical abuse my brother took and he did not retaliate because of the old adage about his masculinity being questioned and the fact that he was brought up never to hit a female. Someone should investigate the number of men being abused by women who do not get to fight back. I have even seen terrible verbal abuses in supermarkets by the women with their spouses -- it's very sad.

I was taught, as were we all, that this is a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Why then is the federal government insisting on going after doctors who prescribe marijuana for patients in California and Arizona? This is an intrastate affair having nothing to do with the federal government.

It has always been gambling -- why call it gaming? If you have money and bet, it is gambling. Couldn't even find gaming in a dictionary, but gambling is in there.

I read about the FDA approving the morning-after pill for women to use if they have an accident during intercourse. Why don't they invent a pill for men to take before they have intercourse even if they forget to use a contraceptive? Everything seems to be one-sided for women only to prevent pregnancy.

I was wondering why in North Las Vegas they allow people to go down the street selling food? I thought restaurants and food distributors had to be licensed and checked for cleanliness.

I read the article you had on the hotel-casinos downtown not getting as much money as they expected. I feel the CAT system is the cause of that. I'd like to see casino representatives just get on the buses to see what the problem is even from the terminal where they overload. It's just remarkable how many people have told me they'll make the trip once and that's all.

I read in the SUN where somebody was complaining about the bus service. Granted, the bus service leaves a lot to be desired, but there's a 10,000 percent improvement over the old Las Vegas Transit System. I'm just wondering what this person would do if they had to travel with that system.

I'm commenting on a story from the Feb. 21 paper written by Larry Henry on (Rep. John) Ensign. It says, "Ensign is a member of Promise Keepers, an all-male religious group that advocates an at-home role for women." I'm so sorry that this man is a writer for your paper and he doesn't even understand what Promise Keepers is. I don't happen to belong to it and neither does my husband, but at least I know what it stands for. He's inferring something that's wrong. I just wish the writers could be better informed because I've seen this too many times in the past.

I'd like to make a comment on the the article (about the DMV) by Melissa Schorr. I'm quite surprised that you'd even let this article out. Obviously, the problem was with the insurance company, which she's praising, not the DMV. She's calling people names, which is kind of ridiculous. To me, she sounds like a bubble-gum snapping, over-aged teenager who's used to nothing but the mall.
