Women’s History Month celebrated

Performances, poetry reading and lectures are among the UNLV-sponsored activities scheduled in honor of Women's History Month.

Two of the major events this month are a women's poetry night and a talk by Leslea Newman, author of "Heather Has Two Mommies."

All the events are free and open to the public. For additional information, call UNLV's women's studies program at 895-0837.

Monday, a women's poetry night titled, "Expressing Ourselves: Celebrating Together," starts at 7 p.m. in the Enigma Garden Cafe located downtown on Fourth Street, just north of Charleston Boulevard.

On March 18, Newman will talk about the many controversies surrounding her children's book about lesbian parents. This event is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the Moyer Student Union ballroom.

Other events:

* "Borders Benefit Days," March 14-16. Borders Bookstores in Southern Nevada will give 10 percent of any sales those days to UNLV's women's studies programs as long as the customer mentions the program.

* "Uninvited: Response to Contemporary Propaganda," a photography exhibit by Donna Pattee that will take place March 17-21 at the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. The opening reception is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. March 17.

* "Women in the Design Professions," a March 17 symposium sponsored by UNLV's architecture department and Tate & Snyder Architects. For more information call 895-3031.

Next month, UNLV's Jean Nidetch Women's Center and KLAS Channel 8 will sponsor the third annual "Eye on Women Expo" -- a full-day of activities that specifically address contemporary women's issues.

The expo will be held April 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Stardust hotel-casino. Admission is $5. Proceeds will benefit the women's center re-entry program, which provides assistance to adults who are returning to college.

Hourly personal and professional development seminars will set the tone for the event. Some of the topics include breast health, sexual assault and violence prevention and awareness, interview skills, resume writing, surviving the downsizing syndrome, career opportunities and dressing for success.

As part of the expo, Nevada Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa will recognize the recipients of the Southern Nevada Women's Role Model Award. Also, Macy's will present a show and more than 40 exhibitors will be on hand.

For additional information call the women's center at 895-4475.
