Clifford the Dog to visit LV readers

If that sounds like fiction, it's not.

The big, red canine will featured in a Nevada Reading Week kickoff activity, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. The event precedes Nevada Reading Week.

A cast of characters, from Clifford to Mr. Popper and his penguins, another children's classic, will come to life as student groups portray scenes from their favorite books and stories. Other entertainment will be featured. In addition, all students attending will receive a free book.

Students, parents and teachers are invited.

The goal is to generate excitement about reading, says Danielle Miller, CCSD reading specialist and coordinator of the event.

"The best way to make lifelong readers out of students is to get them excited about reading," she says. "We wanted to show them that reading is not a passive activity, that they can bring the printed page to life in their minds."

The event is sponsored by the Clark County School District and the Clark County Department of Parks and Recreation.
