School zoning approved

Countless hours of public meetings paid off for the Clark County School District zoning committee -- its recommendations were unanimously approved by the School Board.

Zoning boundaries for the 1997-98 school year were decided Thursday for elementary and some middle schools, affecting thousands of Las Vegas Valley families.

The changes include:

* Some students who attend Beatty and Vanderburg elementary schools will attend Cartwright Elementary School, located in the southeast part of the valley, when it opens in the fall.

* Another school scheduled to open in the fall, Bonner Elementary in the northwest area, will take some students who attend Piggott Elementary.

* Guy Elementary will also open in the fall, and is planned as a team school with Wolfe Elementary in the northwest. Some students who now attend Wilhelm Elementary will be moved to the Guy/Wolfe team school.

* To avoid additional overcrowding at Bruner Elementary, some students will be transferred to Wilhelm elementary, also in the northwest.

* The move that has caused the most controversy for rezoning is the one that will affect students attending Adcock, May and Parsons elementaries in the northwest.

Boundaries were shifted so that students attending those three schools will be attending either Rhodes, May or the Guy/Wolfe team school. Rhodes is also a new school scheduled to open in the fall.

* Another school suffering from severe overcrowding is Herron Elementary in the northeast. Zoning changes will take a portion of those students and move them to Tate and Mountain View elementary schools.

* Some students who attend Tate will be reassigned to Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary in the northeast.

* A portion of students who attend Rundle Elementary will be reassigned to Beckley Elementary, also in the northeast.

Several middle school attendance boundaries were also shifted.

* Some students who attend O'Callaghan and Robison middle schools will be reassigned to Keller Middle School, which will open in the fall.

* Additional middle-school boundary zones will be voted upon at 4:30 p.m. March 13.

The School Board also voted to rescind a zoning change made in 1996 that would have moved some students who attend Garside Middle School to Guinn Middle School. A decision was made to allow those students to remain at Garside.

Concern was voiced by parents and members of the zoning committee over some of the recommended changes because some children will have to cross busy streets where there are no crossing guards or flashing lights.

President Susan Brager said the safety committee will review any unsafe areas brought to its attention, and asked that parents and zoning members put their concerns in writing. The safety committee will make recommendations to the School Board prior to the start of the 1997-98 school year.
