Searchlight veterans set fund-raiser

Amvets Post No. 1 in Searchlight is having its 20th annual Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner on March 15 at the Cal-Nev-Ari Fire Station. This event is one of the post's major fund-raising efforts each year.

Amvets has used the funds raised by these dinners to assist the Disabled American Veterans in obtaining a van for the transportation of veterans from Laughlin, Cal-Nev-Ari and Searchlight to the VA Clinic in Las Vegas. The post also provides drivers for the van as well as honor guards for veterans' funerals, parades and memorial services within the area from Boulder City to Laughlin.

The 60-member organization, under Commander Eugene Soles, has also provided partial funding for local modeling hopeful Shiroma Francis to attend a major modeling contest in New York City, and has provided a donation to Operation Godspeed, which is raising funds to build a chapel at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

The dinner will commence with an Oasis starting at 4 p.m. and the dinner will be served at 5 p.m. A $4-a-dinner donation is requested. The fire station is located in Cal-Nev-Ari, 10 miles south of Searchlight on Highway 95.
