Station Casinos’ Midwest chief resigns, replaced by Harrah’s executive

Station Casino officials gave no reason for the unexpected departure Thursday of Joseph J. Canfora, 38, who spent 14 years with the Las Vegas-based gaming company. He had been in charge of the company's two twin casino complexes in Missouri, one opened just recently in Kansas City, the other at St. Charles.

"Joe Canfora made many contributions to the growth of Station Casinos and we certainly wish him well in all endeavors," Station Chairman Frank Fertitta III said in a statement.

Succeeding Canfora is Jay Sevigny, 37, who had been general manager of Harrah's North Kansas City Casino & Hotel.

Laurance Lacaff, president of Harrah's riverboat division, said a successor to Sevigny is expected to be named within 10 days.

"We're sorry to see Jay go," said Lacaff, who said Sevigny had been viewed as one of Harrah's rising stars. "That's the price you pay for developing good people."

Sevigny first joined Harrah's in Reno, Nev., as a busboy, rising to become director of marketing at another Harrah's casino in Laughlin, Nev. He left the company for another rival in 1991, returning in 1993 to head the North Kansas City project.

Harrah's, which opened in 1994, and the Station Casino, which opened in January, are the market leaders in Kansas City. Station opened with a staff of more than 3,000, but since has laid off several hundred of its employees.
