UNLV Notes: Swimmers, divers in 4th place

UNLV was in fourth place after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in San Antonio.

Southern Methodist led after Thursday's opener with 244 points, followed by defending champion Brigham Young (152.5), Texas Christian (151), UNLV (150) and Hawaii (98.5).

SMU opened the meet with a new conference record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Mustangs' time of 1:19.88 shattered the old mark of 1:20.56 set by Hawaii in 1990.

Other records were set by New Mexico's Nolan Wood in the 100 individual medley, SMU's Ali Al-Hasan on the one-meter diving board and the Mustangs in the 400 medley relay.

Volleyball

UNLV volleyball coach Deitre Collins has been named to the USA Women's Volleyball National Team selection committee.

Collins was chosen by head coach Mick Haley to help select the players to make up the national team that will represent the United States at competitions up to and including the 2000 Super Olympics.
