Nowlin-Tres' layup tied the game 46-46 and after getting fouled, she converted one free throw to give San Diego State (23-6) the lead for good. She was selected the tournament's MVP.
Utah (24-5) got no closer than three points the rest of the way on a free throw by Angie Thill with 7:42 to play.
Sandy Wright then scored four straight points to keep the Aztecs ahead 54-47 with 6:26 to go.
Wright had 15 points and six assists and Olivia DiCamilli had 12 points for San Diego State, which trailed for much of the second half until Nowlin-Tres' layup gave the Aztecs a 44-43 advantage with 10:47 to play.
Julie Krommenhoek led Utah with 21 points. Sara Works added 14 points.
Wright joined Nowlin-Tres on the all-tournament team. Also selected were Krommenhoek, Kim Brandl of Southern Methodist and Kendis Leeburg of Hawaii.
