Fugitive murder defendant found in N.J.

Charles Manley, a fugitive murder defendant from Las Vegas, was captured early today along with his daughter in a New Jersey motel.

The apprehension of the four-time ex-felon, according to Blackjack Bail Bonds President Mike Taylor, resulted from a telephone call the daughter made to her mother from the motel room.

Taylor said the call was traced not through high-tech wiretapping, but by simply pressing *69 on the mother's New Jersey phone, where he said he had a representative waiting.

Members of the Camden County sheriff's office swooped down on the Envoy Motel, in the Camden suburb of Booklawy, at 6:30 a.m. and arrested Manley along with his 29-year-old daughter.

Undersheriff Joe Dougherty said Manley put up no resistance.

The daughter, Beverly Gray, was taken into custody, but Dougherty said he didn't believe she was going to be charged.

Manley disappeared shortly before a Jan. 23 court hearing in Las Vegas on a motion by Deputy District Attorney Dan Seaton to revoke his $250,000 bail and keep him in jail until his trial in July.

"That's great," Seaton commented when told of Manley's capture. "I'm very eager to give Mr. Manley his day in court."

Taylor had vowed that Manley would be back in custody before the six-month deadline expired for him to turn over the bond money to the state.

"He succeeded in delaying his murder trial a bit, but he'll be there," Taylor predicted.

The Manley saga was recounted on "America's Most Wanted" a week ago, and Taylor said police received more than 100 calls in response.

But the break in the case came through the family connection, rather than any of the tips.

Manley, charged in the murder of his schoolteacher girlfriend Roxanne Logan, might face the death penalty if he is convicted.
